M. A. Vardaman, Feb. 25, 1848 – May 2, 1918

This is Martha A. (Conway) Vardaman, daughter of Henry and Adeline (Jourdan/Jordan) Conway and second wife of Edwy L. Vardaman, born February 25, 1948, in Russell County, AL – died May 2, 1918, in Chilton Co., AL.

Note: Although her gravestone shows her birth year as 1848, the 1900 census shows her birth date as February 1847 and her age as 53. Her age varies widely from one census to the next from 1850 through 1910. A thorough analysis of available information leads me to the conclusion that her correct birth year is 1847 as reported on the 1900 census.

17-year old Martha A. (Conway) Vardaman was the second wife of Jack Vardaman's gg-grandfather, 60-year old, Edwy L. Vardaman.  There was no issue from this union. She lived on for many years after the death of her husband.

Alice Jane (Conway) Honeycutt was Martha's baby sister whom she brought to her marriage with Edwy Vardaman and whom he raised. Martha lived her entire life with Alice both during her marriage and subsequent widowhood with Edwy Vardaman and in the Honeycutt household after Alice's marriage.  W. L. and Alice (Conway) Honeycutt had four daughters, three of whom are buried with their spouses at the Union Grove Cemetery.

Alice Honeycutt, Oct. 10, 1860 – Feb. 6, 1927, wife of W. L. Honeycutt

This is Alice Jane “Janie” (Conway) Honeycutt, daughter of Henry and Adeline (Jourdan/Jordan) Conway and wife of William L. Honeycutt, born October 10, 1860, in Alabama – died February 6, 1927 in Chilton Co., AL.

Note: Although her gravestone shows her birth year as 1860, her death certificate shows her age at death as 67 without a birth date. This would indicate a birth year of 1859. On the 1900 census her birth date is shown as October 1861 and her age as 38 which is in agreement with her age of 18 shown on the 1880 census. However, it does not agree with her age of 9 on the 1870 census or her age of 49 on the 1910 census which agree and which would indicate a birth year of 1860.

W. L. Honeycutt, Dec. 26, 1866 – Mar. 27, 1919, husband of Alice Honeycutt.

This is William L. “Billy” Honeycutt, son of Jefferson Jasper “Dick” and Emily A. (Marcus) Honeycutt and husband of Alice Jane Conway, born December 26, 1866, in Chilton Co., AL – died March 27, 1919, in Chilton Co., AL
