The inscription describes a census ordered by Quirinius, Governor of Syria, a few years before 10 B.C. According to the Gospel of Luke, (Luke 2:2) Quirinius was Governor at the time of the census that sent Mary and Joseph from their home in Nazareth to Bethlehem, Joseph's home town. |
