 | 1864 Letter Iowa regarding George W Vardaman's death "I certify on honor that George W Vardaman a Corp of ? Leonard T Mc? Company (D) of the 46th Regiment of Iowa Inft Volunteer of the State of Iowa born in Columbus State of Ill aged 30 years, six feet one inch high, light complex, blue eyes, fair hair and by occupation a farmer having enlisted at Bedford, Iowa on the 21st day of May 1864 by L.T. Mc ? recruiting officer, and was on the 10th day of June 1864 mustered in to the service of the United States at Davenport, Iowa for the term of One Hundred Days in said Company and Regiment and having served honestly and faithfully in said Company and Regiment til the 1st day of Aug 1864 that which time he died in early of disease at Collersville, Tenn.
The said Corp George W Vardeman has not been paid since his enlistment at Bedford, Iowa. There is pay due him from the date of his enlistment till the first day of August 1864 the date of his death. He has received from the United States clothing amounting to seventeen dollars seventy cents which he received since his enlistment.
He is indebted to ? Given in duplicate at Colliersville this 2nd day of August A.D. 1864."

I, Martha E Vardaman, at this time a resident of Summitville, Madison County, Indiana, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made:
Item 1, I bequeath and devise to my beloved husband, Daniel Vardaman, the following described real estate in the town of Summitville, Madison County, Indiana to wit: Lots Newberry one (1), two (2), three (3), four (4), five (5), six (6), seven (7) in Walnut Grove addition to the town of Summitville, Indiana to withhold the same during his natural life, and after the death of my beloved husband, Daniel Vardaman, I bequeath and devise said above hereby lots to my beloved children: George W. Sisk, Jonathan A Sisk, Soloman P Sisk, by a former husband, Minne L Conanor, Richard I Vardaman, Leota M Beall, and William M Vardaman, my beloved husband’s son by a former marriage all to share and share alike, said real estate being bequeathed and ? subject to a certain mortgage on said real estate made payable to William H Wilkins, and subject to an outstanding notes due Jonathan A Sisk and should my beloved husband, Daniel Vardaman, fail to attend to said mortgage and interest then I divise that my said children pay the same and in that went the my said beloved children shall be entitled to said real estate.
Item 2, I bequeath and devise to my beloved children, George W Sisk, Jonathan A Sisk, and Soloman P Sisk, my children by a former husband, and Minnie L Conanor, and Richard I Vardaman and Leota M Beall, my children by my present husband, Daniel Vardaman, said children to share as share alike the following described real estate in Madison County, Indiana, to wit: Lots Newberry eight (8), nine (9), ten (10), eleven (11), twelve (12), thirteen (13), fourteen (14), fifteen (15), sixteen (16), seventeen (17), eighteen (18), nineteen (19), twenty (20), twenty-five (25), twenty-six (26), twenty-seven (27) in Walnut Grove addition to Summitville, Indiana and lots newberry: 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 226, 227, 228, 229, 230 231, 241, 243 and fifty-two (52) feet off of West ends of lots 187 and 188, also lot number 224, all of said lots bring us pack addition to Summitville, Indiana to share as share alike.
Item 3. I give and bequeath to my beloved husband, Daniel Vardaman, enough of the household furniture to furnish one room, also the heating stove, and I give and bequeath to my beloved son, Nathan A Sisk, enough ? clothes for one big ??, and the balance of my household goods and personal papers I give and bequeath to my beloved children, George W Sisk, Jonathan A Sisk and Soloman P Sisk, my children by a former marriage, and Minnie L Conanor, Richard I Vardaman, and Leota M Beall, my children of my present husband, Daniel Vardaman, after the payment of the funeral expenses and other out-standing obligations, to share and share alike.
Item 4, I constitute and appoint George W Sisk the executor of this will.

That the said soldier died April 18th 1909 at Mount Ayr, Iowa, that she was not divorced from him; that she has not remarried since his death. |
