 | St. Anne's Episcopal Church 12/12/24 Email from David Vardiman to Genealogist Tone Halverson who is working on hiring a Swedish genealogist:
"I heard from Bruce Bendler today, he has found another possible (Johannes Vardeman) reference, wherein John Wardeman is listed as a doner towards the Appoquinimink Church in 1724, as stated in a letter from the Appoquinimink Church to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church.
Along with John Wardeman we find two other very familiar names mentioned, that of Capt. John Heally and James Dyre, John is listed as a Church Warden. You may remember James Heally was listed as a witness to Johan Vardeman’s death in 1714 and James Dyre name is seen as a land surveyor on many Vardeman records.
St. Anne’s Church is only 5 miles walking distance from the center of Johan Vardeman’s 313-acre plantation. Bruce is researching the cemetery records, hoping to find mention of a Johan Vardeman burial."
Email from Bruce Bendler, US genealogist:
"I was looking at a history of St. Anne's Episcopal Church which I have owned for a number of years. St. Anne's was established in 1704 as a mission of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, established by the Church of England to plant Anglican parishes in British colonies. One of the men who subscribed funds to the parish in 1725 and again in 1739 was John Wardeman. I have added this information to a report I had previously sent you which is attached.
Interestingly, John Healy (spelled Heally here) was a warden and vestrymen of St. Annes from 1705 to 1726. A Daniel Heally and a James Heally are also mentioned in church records, but with nothing about their possible relationship to John.
The original St. Anne's property is on SR 71, about one mile south of Middletown. The building on the property was built in 1772 but is not used for active worship. It replaced the original structure.built in 1705. The building used today is in the center of Middletown.
There are no parish registers that go back to the 18th century, so unfortunately we don't have that resource." |
