  • Notes
    • Both parents from Germany. Newspaper articles about Frank Retting/Santen at the Cincinnatti, Ohio Library according to Betty Mason and Lillian Mechlam (daughter of Gertie). 8/2003.

May have been a German Jew according to Fran.

Phone conversation with his granddaughter, Lillian Elizabeth Peterman Mechlam:
"Grandpa Frank Retting changed his name to Frank Santen and moved from Cincinnati, Ohio to E. St. Louis, Illinois over some family scandle. Don't know what happened or how he picked the name Santen. When he was in Cincinnatti he was a fire captain for the salvage corp. He would go in and try to save as many things as possible during a fire. He was involved in saving livestock in the big Cincinnati stockyard fire. He lost his job over the scandle and didn't go back into the fire service in Illinois. Think he trained dogs in Illinois I think.

Remembers her father vaguely more like a shadow. He was very tall and she remembers that he would pat her head whenever he was heading out. Lillian Peterson was almost 4 when her father died in 1918 from the flu.

They (Lillian and siblings with their mom, Gertie) moved to her Grandpa Frank Retting-Santen's house in E. St. Louis for 2 years. Remembers playing paperdolls with Aunt Dorothy. They also played under the house and could hear conversations above. Although Grandpa Frank Retting-Santen had a bad reputation he "was very good to me. He had a nice home. My mother's sisters, Kitty and Alice were there on occasion and Aunt Dorothy lived there."

Interview of Betty Mason 19 Jan 2001:
I had chicken pox when visiting him one time. He was blind when he died which could have been because he was a fireman and I think he smoked a pipe. He died in 1937 the year of the big flood in Cincinnati. That was a hard time. I was 10 years old and I remember my mother went to his funeral.

04 Apr 2012: Phone call with Fran (Frank William's daughter):
She remembers him telling her a story about one time when his house was full of smoke and he crawled on his stomach. She thought that was fascinating.
He smoked a pipe and Fran loved the smell of his pipe.
"He was a handsome old man."
      His favorite grandchild Russ.
Fran said her father, Frank William had curls in his hair as a child and didn't like them. He got burs stuck in his hair when playing and every time his mother, Lillian, took one out she slapped him. Her grandfather, Frank Matthew was a mean man. She thinks he was Jewish because he married a Jewish woman and the whole family looks Jewish.

21 July 2015 - Phone call with Fran
"Grandpa Frank Matthew Reting-Santen was mean. When his first wife died he said, "throw her in the river." He hit Aunt Kitty and made her eyes cross. I always thought he was a German Jew and married a Jewish. I don't know why they were buried in a Catholic cemetery, but I believe the truth is they were Jewish. A true German would not have married a Jewis so he must have been a German Jew. When Mamie told him that the father of the baby wouldn't marry her he told her "kill him" and she did so he was partly responsible."
