| 1886 Iowa, Ringgold County, Declaration for Original Invalid Pension 20 April 1886
On this 20th day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six, personally appeared before me James H Burke, Clerk of the District Court, a court record within and for the County and State aforesaid Benjamin W Vardaman, aged 53 years, a resident of the town of Mt Ayr, county of Ringgold, State of Iowa, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Ben Vardaman who was enrolled on the 9th day of August 1862 in company F of the 29th regiment of Iowa vol Inft commanded by Col Thos H Benton, and was honorably discharged at New Orleans, LA on the 10 day of August 1865; that his personal description is as follows; Age 53 years, height 5 feet 10 inches; complexion light; hair light; eyes blue. That wile a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty, "on a march over Little Rock in the in the State of Arkansas on or about the 18 day of August 1863 he was sunstruck that from that time during his service in the army he had frequent attacks of severe headaches and vomiting and that at or near Fort Blakely in the state of Alabama about the spring of 1865 he received another sunstroke which completely prostrated him. That on and to the present time by reason of the foregoing injuries thus received he has been unable to endure any physical or mental exertion. That he was not treated in hospitals that he received medical treatment of the regimental surgeon in spring of 1865 and there after up to his discharge from army. That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as state above. (militia prior to entering United States service) That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the towns of Bedford and Mt. Ayr, in the State of Iowa, and his occupation has been that of a jeweler. That prior to his entry into the service above named, he was a man of good, sound physical health; being when enrolled a jeweler. That he is now wholly disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor, by reason of his injuries above described, received in the service of the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid-pension roll of the United States. |

In relation to invalid pension claim of Benjamin W Vardaman late Sargt of Company (F) 29th Iowa Vol Inft.
On this 20th day of April 1886 pensioner appeared before me James H Burk, Clerk of the District Court, within and for the county and state aforesaid. (the same being a court of record).
Benjamin W Vardaman a person whom I certify to be respectable and entitled as credible who being by me duly sworn according to law states in relation to the above entitled claim as follows:
“I Benjamin W Vardaman an ? that I am the claimant above mentioned in this case that on being discharged from the army in August 1865 I returned to my home then in Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa where I resided until the Spring of 1867 at which time I moved to Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa where I now reside and have resided ever since the spring of 1867 that I was affected with pains of the head and dizziness with frequent vomiting each year since the year 1863 when I first became so ? or affected that after leaving the army by reason of having been discharged then from 1865 up till Feb 1869 I received no regular treatment from any physician but at each approach of an attack would retire to my room at my home and keep hid from the heat of the sun, remain quiet and receive such remedy as my wife would provide such as teas, bathing, etc. that in Feb 1859 at which time my condition became more alarming and the attacks more frequent I procured the medical attendance an treatment of John Honne M.D. of Mount Ayr, Iowa who has been my regular physician. Ever since that date ? Feb 1869 up to the present time that I am unable to perform any manual labor and have been so incapacitated from performing manual labor ever since my return from the army that my case grows worse with each succeeding year that I am incapacitated by reason of such injuries received while in line of duty in the service of the United States from any physical or mental labor whatever.

In the matter of increase pension claim under certificate No 353102 of Benjamin W Vardaman, late Sergt Co. F 29th Iowa Infantry Vol on this day of April A.D. 1889, personally appeared before me James H Burke, Clerk of the District court, the same being a court of record within and for the county and state aforesaid, William Horne, M.D. aged 43 years, a resident of Mount Ayr, in the county of Ringgold and state of Iowa, whose post office address is Mount Ayr, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit and who, being by me duly sworn according to law, states in relation to the aforesaid case as follows:
“That I did not know the applicant prior to enlistment. That I first became acquainted with him in the year 1869. That ever since I have been his family physician. That I have prescribed for him every year since then. He is troubled with vertigo causing hemicrania and also indigestion and functional disease of the heart resulting from the indigestion. That I have kept no dates of prescriptions but that I have given him treatment every year since 1869. That it s my opinion that he has been for the last two years and is now totally unfit for any mental or any manual labor unprecipitated from performance from personal observation.”

On this 28th day of December A.D. 1899 personally appeared before me Chas G Stranahan a clerk of the District Court ? and for the county aforesaid Benjamin W Vardaman aged 67 years a resident of Mount Ayr County of Ringgold and State of Iowa whose post offce address is Mount Ayr, Iowa who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is a pensioner of the United states ? enrolled at the Des Moines, Iowa Pension Agency at the note of fourteen dollars per month Cert No 353102 by reason of disability incurred while in the military service of the United States while a Sergeant of Co “F” 29th Regt. Iowa Inft. Vol and that his present physical condition is such that he believes himself entitled to receive an increase of his pension. He further declares that he is disabled and the following manner to wit that he is now receiving a pension of fourteen dollars per month o account of vertigo headaches and disease of heart results of sunstroke. That save the allowance of such pension such disabilities have increased in a marked degree and that ? increase ? each succeeding year ?. Such disabilities have produced loss of memory and ? also a ? infeabled condition and low of appetite and vitality to the extent that he is wholly incapacitated from the performance of any and all manual labor and almost continually unfitted from any mental or skilled labor. He being a silver smith by occupation wherefore he asks the Hou. Commission of Pensions that he be given an increase of pension commensurate with the disabilities thus sustained that he appoints no one as his attorney but files this declaration himself the claimant. That she is the widow of Benjamin W Vardaman who was enrolled under the name of enjamin W Vardaman on the 9th day of August 1862 as a Sergeant in Co F 29th Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers and honorably discharged August 10th 1865 having served ninety days or more during the late war of the rebellion...
That she was married under the name of Lavinia Randall to said soldier at Bedford, Iowa on the 19th day of October 1856 by Rev ?; that she had not been previously married; that the soldier had not been previously married.
That the said soldier died April 18th 1909 at Mount Ayr, Iowa, that she was not divorced from him; that she has not remarried since his death. |
