American Railway Union strike leader E.V. Debs and his lieutenants, Howard, Kelliher and Rogers all disregarded an injunction and continued to call for strikes so they went to jail for contempt without giving bail although it was offered. It was advised to buy a gun.
Engineer Oscar E Vardaman harassed, beaten and pursued by a crowd of howling strikers pulled his revolver last night and sent Albert Miles to Mercy Hospital, fatally wounded.
