In late 1772, a member of English Parliament secretly
passed Franklin a packet of letters written by the English Massachusetts governor,
Thomas Hutchinson who talked openly of restricting "English liberties" in the colonies in order to suppress the
growing rebellion. When these letters were published outraged colonists protests grew
in intensity."
