The Interior Journal newspaper started in Lincoln County, Kentucky
in 1860
- Communication:
The Pony Express started April 3, 1860
spurred by the threat of the Civil War and the need for faster
communication with the West. Riders left simultaneously from St. Joseph,
Missouri, and Sacramento, California.
Education: "In the years before the Civil War, the high school movement expanded slowly. By 1860 there were only 300 high schools
in the nation, compared with more than 6,000 academies; of the former, more than 100 were located in Massachusetts, the only state to require
communities of 50 families or more to provide secondary-level education."
